Just in time for the wedding season comes Dhanush, an exclusive boutique for designer Kancheevaram sarees. Rajesh and Shashikala, a husband and wife team, are behind this creative venture. The boutique was inaugurated on November 8 by Veena SK Jain, when the duo hosted a coffee morning. Rajesh, an interior designer by profession, used to design sarees for his wife which were greatly appreciated by other. Shashikala herself was interested in gems, not as all women are wont to, but with a deeper interest in co-ordinating gems and jewellery with fabrics. That’s when the couple decided to pool their creative energies into starting a business where both their passions would find an outlet.
Dhanush on one hand gives you a selection of some exclusive sarees, which flaunt the motifs and borders designed by Rajesh. Once the designs are in place, the sarees are woven in looms in South India. Some with prints are sent to Delhi and those with embroidery and embellishments are given finishing touches in Calcutta.
For brides and women who wish to make a statement with their ensemble, Rajesh and Shashikala help co-ordinate accessories, like bags and shoes. But when it comes to jewellery, this couple does it best. Says Rajesh, "Very often one does not give importance to who’s wearing the jewellery. It’s always the jeweller’s choice that most people wear. Here, we sit with the bride or the client and help them pick jewellery according to their clothes and their choice in gemstones."
Dhanush will have a new collection every three months. "I don’t believe in mass production. I have a small and selective collection of sarees every quarter. This month you’ll find the sarees in earthy colours but next month you can look forward to sarees in jewel-tones," says Rajesh.
