Dress up in style

Rajesh Belagodu, designer and proprietor of Dhanush, a saree boutique in jayanagar, helps out with some style tips that are sure to take you from “just nice” to “fantastic” in minutes. He suggests wearing long blouses - much like overcoats - to dramatise a plain saree. But wear it only if the blouse fits well; otherwise you may end up looking clumpsy. A neat, long blouse can give you the look of wearing a trendy top on a skirt.

Try wearing the saree in the “twinpallu” style. Two contrasting pallus juxtaposed can transform the look of a plain saree.

Polka dots are back in a big way. Wear them on sarees and you’ll go from plain jane to glamourous jane!

Bold geometric prints on traditional sarees such as kanjeevarams are in fashion. Prints come in myriad colours, in contrast to weaves, that can take only specific colours. They add bright splashes of colour to any saree, taking its glamour quotient up.

Belagodu also suggests that you steer away from crepes as they’re rather heavy. Georgettes are a better option. They are not only dressy, but also drape beautifully.

The festive season may be a good time to experiment with your hair. If you’ve been wearing long hair, try straight, shorter cuts, for a more contemporary look.

Team your saree with traditional balis or designer hoops, that are back in fashion. You could try totally ethnic ones or even large, plain hoops for a touch of drama.

Nothing complements a saree more than the right bag. And no formal leather bags please. Try trendy clutch purses or little batuas that really make for the perfect accessory.
